The growth arc is obvious, and it suits Khalid: Free Spirit’ s tracks reposition the El Paso songwriter as a young star with an old soul. In a lot of ways, ‘Talk’ is the subjective antithesis of ‘Young, Dumb & Broke’ – the latter song no-strings-attached, carefree, and proud of it, the former is level-headed, diplomatic, forthright. It’s a proof of concept track for the Texan titan he can and will have huge, crossover hits as big as ‘ Young, Dumb & Broke’, and he can make unifying songs that stretch beyond a single topic or topline. We should start with ‘ Talk’, the radio giant that stands out as Free Spirit’s best song, and a defining one for the first quarter of 2019. And he sounds like it on Free Spirit, this week’s Feature Album on triple j. The “young dumb broke high school kid” is older, smarter and significantly richer.
